Berlin Prenzlauer Berg - Bike Tour (private)

Our Prenzlauer Berg bike tour starts - of course on historical ground, namely at the former border crossing Bornholmer Straße which was the first to open on November 9, 1989. The "Square of November 9, 1989", which is located here today, is a reminder of this great, world-changing event.

Following the course of the Wall we cycle over the Mauerpark, which is used on Sundays as a flea market, for karaoke and music improvisations, and thus attracts a lot of international visitors, who turn the park into a party zone in the evening. From there we continue to Bernauer Strasse, formerly divided from 1961 to 1989.

From here we leave the Berlin Wall history of the district and go to the origin of the district. We drive along the world capital of breweries, which flourished at the end of the 19th century, where we pass through what was once the largest brewery in Germany (now the Kulturbrauerei), as well as along the tenements already illustrated by Heinrich Zille around Kollwitzplatz, which was repopulated not only by the "Swabians". Then just around the block we come to the oldest water tower in Berlin - the "Dicken Hermann", completed in 1877.

From here we head over to the Bötzowviertel to the east, named after brewery owner Julius Bötzow, vis-a-vis the neighboring district of Friedrichshain with its park of the same name. Here we will visit the Fairy Tale Fountain, built in 1913 by Berlin city architect Ludwig Hoffmann, with its 34 by 54 meter fountain in the neo-baroque style, and will guess Grimm's fairy tales from the sculptures we see!

From the history to the present we cycle along the green of the street to the velodrome of the cycle racing track and the biggest event hall of Berlin as well as the swimming and diving hall in the Europasportpark. The latter is completely submerged in a heaped-up landscape base.

Through an underpass, we reach the former site of the central cattle and slaughterhouse, which went into operation in 1881. In today's residential park, listed buildings merge with modern residential buildings.

From this point, the most southeastern point of Prenzlauer Berg, we return on a northerly route via the Ernst Thälman Park, built for the 750th anniversary of Berlin, with the Ernst Thälmann Monument, with its enormous dimensions of 14 meters high and 15 meters wide, and attached to it the residential park of the same name. Next to it is the GDR prestige building built in 1987 as one of the largest and most modern star theaters - the Zeiss Grossplanetarium.

As a last stop we pass through the largest social building of Berlin "Die Palme", built in 1886, named after a potted palm tree standing in the vestibule at that time. This was a homeless asylum and provided night quarters for 5000 people who were given a place to sleep here in 40 dormitories.
